Meet HHL’ Partner University: New York University Stern School of Business
From HHL to the US: Spend a term abroad at New York Stern
New York City – the place of dreams, inspiration and business success. For many, this city carries a distinct feeling of “anything is possible”. At HHL it is possible to spend a term studying at New York University Stern School of Business, hereby building your very only dream career. We talked to full-time Master in Management student Anas Bardan, who spent a semester abroad at Stern during the fall of 2021.
Interview with Anas Bardan
What is the most inspiring learning experience abroad you have had until today?
The most inspiring thing at Stern School of Business are how many renowned professors teach there. They are Nobel Prize winners, New York Times best-selling authors and industry professionals. Moreover, they genuinely care about every student. They don’t only have a textbook teaching approach but use their years of professional experience, which makes their points more relevant and applicable in real life.
I was most impressed by how social impact and sustainability were embedded in Stern’s culture and curriculum. Aside from the opportunity to have an impact through student clubs and initiatives, the school offers novel courses focusing on the triple bottom line like climate finance or social entrepreneurship.
How has living and studying in New York City influenced you?
Stern is already one of the top 10 business schools in the US, but coupled with the location in New York City it becomes a truly unique experience. As the business capital of the world, New York has many resources which means great opportunities for students. Wall Street and Goldman Sachs are all here. Half the things found in my textbooks I could see right here in the city.
How has your semester at New York University Stern School of Business helped you to expand your network?
Throughout the semester I got to know many interesting students with diverse backgrounds and fascinating professional experience from all kinds of industries. Additionally, the club system at Stern is a bit more academic and professional-focused, like the Management Consulting Association (MCA) and the Quantitative Finance Society, so I was able to learn a lot and expand my network through these clubs.
How has HHL supported you during your time abroad?
From the very beginning of my studies, the team from the International Office was helpful and always available. Even though the exchange semester in the US was accompanied by uncertainties due to the Covid-19-triggered travel restrictions, the HHL team was very transparent and had many alternatives in case the semester didn’t take place.

Is there anything else you would to share with the community?
I would recommend anyone considering an exchange semester at Stern to be active and take initiative because the best thing about New York City is that it can be whatever you want it to be.
