Study Abroad Experience: NYU Stern School of Business
Spend a term abroad at New York University Stern School of Business
From Leipzig to New York. We’ve asked some of the students who lived abroad during 2021 to share their experience with the HHL Community. Join full-time Master in Management Pauline Sofie Thill as she walks us through the highlights of her semester at NYU Stern in New York City.
What is the most inspiring learning experience abroad you have had until today?
I took a class on Real Estate Development and Entrepreneurship that I just completed with a final project presentation to investors. Professor Chernoff, who was teaching this course, was a very inspiring teacher for me. The amount of creativity and endurance he put into each of his real estate deals during the course of his long career impressed me and motivated me to further pursue real estate investments of my own.
How has your study abroad experience at NYU Stern influenced you?
Surprisingly, I think my time in the busiest city in the world has made me calmer and more focused on what I want. Something about so much going on around me at all times has helped me to remove the unnecessary noise from my personal thoughts and plans and to return to what I want to do with my time.
How has your time at NYU Stern helped you to expand your network?
Since NYU Stern has exchange students from all over the world, I have met people from many other international business schools like Bocconi in Milan, London Business School and ESCP Paris. We are a large group of about 50 people here who support each other, go out together, talk about career options and get each other in contact with people who can help us reach our goals. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive and diverse group!

How has HHL supported you during your time abroad?
I am very thankful to HHL for enabling me to come to NYU Stern without additional charge for one of the most expensive MBA programs in the US, and for enabling me to postpone my term abroad last year. Back then it wasn’t possible to come to the US, and they let me resume the original plan in the following year. Without their flexibility, I would’ve missed out on one of the best times of my life.
