HHL Expert Talk – Recognized Expertise on a Global Market

HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management reacts to current developments in society and economy. The virtual HHL Expert Talk series addresses latest and key topics in its research and academic programs to a broad audience. The HHL Expert Talk offers an open and further education and know-how transfer to the whole HHL community and beyond. This also applies to the ongoing corona crisis. The current events in the series will discuss the pandemic and its impacts on society, economics, sports, and culture.

Join the virtual live talk on May 19th with Professor Wilhelm Althammer of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe Chair for Macroeconomics and Prof. Hans Werner Sinn as his guest, probably Germany’s best-known economist. On the one hand, we will talk about politics in the pandemic and what could have been done better from an economic point of view. Then, we look to the future and the (macro-)economic challenges we will face when the pandemic-related restrictions are lifted.

  • How great is the risk that we will have to expect a return of inflation due to pent-up demand and extremely expansionary monetary policy?
  • How long should we expect zero interest rates? How should we deal with the rise in government debt?
  • Do we need new taxes, should German politicians quickly return to the debt brake?
  • And from a European perspective, how should we view the fact that the Next Generation European Union Fund is now being used to build up community debt at the European level?
  • Is this a step toward more fiscal cooperation in Europe, a “Hamiltonian moment”, or the beginning of a new era of redistribution?
