                                1. Scholarship Introduction – Re-Thinking Leadership with HHL’s Leipzig Leadership Model

Leadership has always been demanding, and this is especially true in today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world. Concerns about the effects of globalization, digitalization, and our collective ecological legacy dominate much of the dialogue among business leaders—and rightly so. From these discussions, important questions arise about where today’s leaders can find the guidance needed to form critical opinions and develop creative solutions to the challenges posed by the VUCA environment.

The Leipzig Leadership Model (LLM) offers guidance by juxtaposing core leadership values, highlighting both their potential and the conflicts between them, while focusing on value contributions to society, organizations, and individuals. At the heart of the model is the value of purpose, which emphasizes the ends-means relationship in leadership, addressing the question of ‘why.’

Sustainable leadership, however, requires continuous renewal at the individual, organizational, and societal levels—what can be called the entrepreneurial spirit. Another fundamental value is responsibility, which serves as a crucial boundary in the pursuit of purpose, ensuring that decisions are made with ethical consideration.

In entrepreneurially-oriented and responsible leadership, decisions and actions must take into account limited resources and competitive pressures. Thus, the final core value of the LLM is effectiveness, ensuring that leaders make meaningful contributions to the bigger picture.

Without it, I would not have achieved what I did, and I am very grateful to HHL and Stephan Stubner for this opportunity.
